The UAE has announced an important update to school entry age requirements, introducing a new cut-off date for children entering kindergarten and Grade 1. The revised policy will apply from the 2026–2027 academic year, offering greater clarity and consistency for parents planning school admissions.
The changes have been approved by the Education, Human Development, and Community Development Council.
What Has Changed
Under the new regulations, the age cut-off date has shifted to December 31, replacing the previous August 31 requirement. This means a child’s eligibility for school entry will now be determined based on their age as of the end of the calendar year.
The update is designed to better align age eligibility across multiple curricula and academic calendars.
Who the New Rule Applies To
The revised cut-off date will apply to schools and kindergartens that begin their academic year in August or September. These institutions will now follow the December 31 cut-off.
Schools that operate on an April start academic calendar will continue using the March 31 cut-off, meaning not all students or institutions are affected by the change.
Updated Age Eligibility Breakdown
The new age requirements apply across British, French, and international curricula, ensuring uniformity across most private school systems in the UAE.
Under the updated rules:
- Pre-K: Child must turn 3 by December 31
- KG1: Child must turn 4 by December 31
- KG2: Child must turn 5 by December 31
- Grade 1: Child must turn 6 by December 31
These benchmarks will be used for admissions starting from the 2026–2027 academic year.
What Parents Should Know
For many families, the updated cut-off provides additional flexibility, particularly for children born later in the year. Parents are advised to review admission timelines early and confirm how individual schools will implement the new policy based on their academic calendar.
Schools are expected to update their admissions guidelines closer to the 2026 intake.
